Liberals generally believe in governmental action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all, and that it is the duty of the government to reduce community issues and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights. They support private property, market economies, individual rights (including civil rights and human rights), liberal democracy, secularism, rule of law, economic and political freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of religion, constitutional government, and privacy rights. Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve peoples problems based on what is best for the greater good of society. Liberals are often referred to as being on the left when put into a political spectrum.
