They are registered nurses with skills and experience in caring for people with cancer, and often have further qualifications in cancer care. Macmillan nurses can help with information about cancer diagnosis, treatment, and help manage side effects. They offer emotional and practical support, and can also tell you about other support available, such as social care, benefits advice, and local support groups.

There are different types of Macmillan nurses, including:

• Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS): They give information about cancer and support during treatment. A CNS who specializes in the type of cancer you have is usually your main contact at the hospital. They are called your key worker. They will give you information about the type of cancer you have, your treatment options, and possible side effects.

• Palliative care nurses: They help manage the symptoms of advanced cancer. They may be based in hospitals or in the community and visit you at home. Macmillan nurses work with your GP and community team to give specialist advice on any medicines and other support you may need.

• Cancer Information Nurse Specialist: They are experienced cancer nurses who give advice and support to people living with cancer. They are available to talk to on the Macmillan Cancer Support Line. They can provide information about cancer diagnosis, treatment, side effects, and what to expect at the end of life. They can also offer support for coping with grief.

Macmillan nurses work in hospitals, hospices, and in the community. They provide direct care to the patient and support and guide other medical practitioners and carers. Education and teaching are large parts of a Macmillan Nurse role. Both in enhancing the Nurses own role and teaching others in a wide range of settings. Although the Macmillan service is historically linked with cancer, Macmillan Nurses now help patients who are suffering from a wide range of other life-limiting diseases.
