Methodism is a collection of associated congregations of Protestantism whose doctrine and beliefs are motivated by the spirit and teachings of John Wesley. Here are some key beliefs of Methodists:

• Trinity: Methodists believe in the Trinity, which is the idea that three figures are united in one God: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit.

• Bible: Methodists believe that the Bible provides the only guide to belief and practice.

• Salvation: A person is free not only to reject salvation but also to accept it by an act of free will.

• Sacraments: Methodists accept two of the sacraments, or rituals, of the church—baptism and Holy Communion.

• Personal relationship with God: Methodists believe that people should have a very personal relationship with God that transforms their lives.

• Service for others: They also have a concern for people in society who need help. They believe that faith in God should lead people into service for others.

• Weekly services: Methodists attend weekly services, usually on Sunday. They believe in simple worship services. Hymns are important in all branches of Methodism.

• Three simple rules: "Do no harm. Do good. Stay in love with God" are the three simple rules that Methodists follow.

Methodists have never thought it necessary to develop an elaborate and systematic body of thought about things religious. They have been comfortable riding on the backs of the theologians of other faith traditions, and prefer to keep in touch with and share modern theological thinking.
