Paganism is a spiritual movement consisting of various groups practicing nature-based polytheistic religions, loosely based on the religions of the ancient world. Pagans believe that nature is sacred and that the natural cycles of birth, growth, and death observed in the world around us carry profoundly spiritual meanings. Pagans view the world as a place of joy and life, not of sin and suffering, and hold a deep reverence for nature and the earth. Pagan traditions and expressions vary widely and can involve communal outdoor rituals, solitary meditation or contemplation, or the use of symbols, talismans, or altars. Some Pagans believe in a multiplicity of Gods and Goddesses, while others see them as merely names and forms that allow us easier contact with the divine. Goddess worship is central in paganism, and Pagans understand deity to be manifest within nature and recognize divinity as taking many forms, finding expression in goddesses as well as gods. Most Pagans worship the old pre-Christian gods and goddesses through seasonal festivals and other ceremonies. Observance of these festivals is very important to Pagans, and those in the hospital will generally wish to celebrate them in some form. Pagans generally do not proselytize, and while classes and retreats may introduce people to the path, the initiative to practice is with each individual. Pagan personal practice can be as simple as lighting a candle at the dark of the moon and meditating on the flame or pouring a fresh cup of water for one’s ancestors and saying a prayer.
