Raccoons are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. They have a diverse diet that includes fruits, berries, nuts, corn, grains, insects, turtles, mice, rabbits, muskrats, and bird eggs. They also eat seafood such as clams, crawfish, frogs, snails, snakes, and fish. Raccoons are opportunistic feeders and have adapted to living near humans, so they may eat birdseed, pet food, and water from fountains or pet bowls. They will also eat any food that isn’t rotted or mildewed, and they have been known to break into trash cans to find food. Baby raccoons typically wean in 16 weeks and then eat a standard raccoon diet. Raccoons are not picky eaters and will eat almost anything to survive, including scavenging dead carrion. However, they should not have onions, garlic, or chocolate.
