Scotland needs to beat Ireland and deny them a bonus point to finish second on the head-to-head rule. They must win with a bonus point (by scoring at least four tries) or by denying their opponents a losing bonus. If Scotland wins by 21 points or more, they will snatch top spot ahead of South Africa, and Ireland would qualify as they beat South Africa in their earlier Pool B encounter. Scotland can also qualify if they beat Ireland by eight points or more, with Ireland not picking up a single losing bonus point in the process. In this case, Scotland and South Africa would finish on exactly the same points difference, so it would go down to try difference. Ireland would qualify if Scotlands try difference improved by three or more as a result of their win.
