In George Orwells Animal Farm, the dogs represent the NKVD, Stalins secret police force. The dogs are raised by Napoleon to be his own private army, and they are used to intimidate and threaten the other animals to ensure that the pigs get their way. The dogs are first unleashed on Animal Farm right after Snowball has wowed everyone with his flashy speech, and from this point on, they become the pigs bodyguards. The dogs are symbols of the Soviet secret police, and they are used to maintain the pigs power and control over the other animals. The dogs loyalty to Napoleon is compared to their previous loyalty to Mr. Jones, foreshadowing the growth of similarity between human and pig. Without the dogs presence, Napoleon would have lost the election, and the animals might have enjoyed less labor, more food, and less oppression, much like the intended result of the Rebellion.
