The stars under the "C" on NFL jerseys indicate the number of years a player has been a captain. Each player designated as a captain wears a "C" patch on the upper right corner of his chest, and the stars are located underneath the "C" patch. The stars are changed from white to gold for each year the player has been a captain with that franchise. If a player has been a captain for at least five seasons, the "C" on the patch, along with the stars, becomes gold. The years spent as a captain stay with a player when he changes teams.
