The United Auto Workers (UAW) union is currently on strike against General Motors, Stellantis, and Ford, demanding better pay and benefits, among other things. Here are some of the key demands of the UAW workers:

• Pay increases: The UAW is asking for a 36% pay increase over a four-year contract. The companies have countered with offers ranging from 17.5% to more than 20% .

• Cost of living adjustments: The UAW is demanding the restoration of cost-of-living pay raises that workers lost in 2009.

• Retirement benefits: The UAW wants the companies to restore defined-benefit pensions that workers previously received and to pay all the health-care costs for retirees.

• End to employment tiers: The union is seeking to eliminate the two-tiered wage system that has been in place since 2007, which pays newer workers less and provides them with fewer benefits.

• Reduced workweek: The UAW is bargaining for a four-day workweek, working 32 hours for 40 hours of pay, and more time off "to spend with family".

• Improved workplace protections: The UAW is also demanding improved retiree and parental leave benefits, among other workplace protections.

The UAW strike is ongoing, and the union has threatened to expand the walkout unless the automakers offer substantially better deals than whats currently on the table.
