In the play Macbeth, the witches make three predictions for Macbeth when he and Banquo meet them after a battle in Scotland. The predictions are:
- Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor.
- Macbeth will become king.
- Banquos sons will become kings.
The witches prophecies come true, and Macbeth becomes Thane of Cawdor and then king after he murders King Duncan with the help of Lady Macbeth. Macbeth becomes paranoid about the third prophecy and sends murderers to kill Banquo and his son. Later in the play, Macbeth visits the witches again, and they give him three more prophecies.
