A person who collects coins is called a numismatist. Numismatics is the study and collecting of things that are used as currency, including coins, paper money, and medals. The word "numismatics" comes from the Latin word "numisma," meaning "coin, currency". While all numismatists are coin collectors, not all coin collectors are numismatists. Coin collectors tend to be motivated by ownership of the coins themselves without delving too far into the details of the country of origin or date, while numismatists study and collect coins from other places and time periods.
