Hospital waste management refers to the proper handling and disposal of waste generated through the course of normal hospital operations. Hospital waste can be infectious, chemical, or radioactive, and can contain potentially harmful microorganisms that can infect hospital patients, health workers, and the general public. The proper management of hospital waste is essential to prevent environmental hazards and widespread illness. Hospital waste can be classified into two categories: risk waste and non-risk waste. Risk waste includes infectious waste, pathological waste, pharmaceutical waste, sharps waste, chemical waste, genotoxic waste, and radioactive waste. Non-risk waste includes garbage and general day-to-day waste produced by foodstuff leftovers and their packaging. Hospital waste management involves the segregation, containment, and disposal of hazardous, hospital-generated, infectious waste. Efficient waste management is critical for healthcare institutions because medical waste can be pathogenic and environmentally hazardous. A medical waste monitoring checklist should include a written management plan, people responsible, appropriate equipment, materials, and supplies, waste management protocols, appropriate separation of wastes, proper collection and transportation of wastes, and appropriate storage and disposal of wastes.
