To pass a car inspection in New York State, you need to ensure that your vehicle is in safe operating condition and meets emissions standards. Here is a list of what you need for a car inspection in New York:
- A valid registration
- Proof of New York State insurance
- Your drivers license
- Your vehicle must be in safe operating condition, including all safety equipment such as headlights, horns, mirrors, turn signals, windshield wipers, and brakes.
- Your vehicle must meet emissions standards. Most vehicles must get an emissions inspection (or diesel emissions inspection) at the time of the safety inspection.
- A valid inspection sticker must be displayed on your vehicle. Inspections expire the last day of the month punched on the inspection sticker.
- If your vehicle fails the inspection, you are not required to have it repaired or re-inspected at the station that performed the initial inspection. Your vehicle may be taken to any registered repair shop, or you may make the required repairs yourself. Your vehicle must then pass a new inspection, at an inspection station of your choice, before an inspection sticker will be issued.
It is important to note that every vehicle registered in New York must receive a car inspection every 12 months.
