It is important to install the geotextile paper under the turf to prevent weeds from growing through the turf.

• Gravel And Drainage: Gravel is porous, which helps it retain water more efficiently than other materials such as sand. As a result, gravel can be ideal for drainage applications where retaining some of the runoff water is beneficial to your property. It is important to ensure proper drainage underneath the turf to avoid mold and other issues.

• Foam Padding, Drainage Tiles: Foam padding can be utilized for playgrounds and surfaces where kids play to provide additional fall protection against serious injuries. Drainage tiles can also be used to provide added comfort and help lengthen the lifespan of your new lawn.

• Large Stones: Rocks ranging from three-eighths to three-fourths of an inch are perfect for artificial grass sub-base. The most common gravel materials used are crushed or decomposed granite, along with other aggregates. Decomposed granite works well with base constructions since its rock structure breaks down easily to conform to the ground’s unique surface contours. Keeping the stones less than one inch in diameter allows the grass to retain a relatively flat surface.

• Fine Materials: Most outdoor applications require preparation of an aggregate base to allow proper water drainage. In general, the ideal ratio of large rocks to fine materials is 70:30, according to the Association of Synthetic Grass Installers. As the rocks mix together, the gaps slowly disappear so that you have a solid stone layer to support the turf above. Altering the ratio changes the turf’s overall stability.

A sub-base is a layer of mixed materials, or aggregates, installed below the artificial grass to create a smooth, compacted surface and a solid foundation to support the lawn. If you’re installing your synthetic turf onto an existing surface with structural support, such as concrete or decking, then installing a sub-base is not necessary. A weed membrane is highly recommended for all synthetic turf installations to prevent weeds from growing through the turf.
