To renew a non-commercial Texas driver license (DL) or identification card (ID) at your local driver license office, you must bring in the following documentation:
- Application for Renewal
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship (if you have not previously provided proof), or Updated Evidence of Lawful Presence
- Proof of Identity
- Proof of Social Security Number (unexpired or within two years of the expiration date – actual card)
You can also renew your Texas driver license, motorcycle license, or identification card online or by telephone if you meet certain requirements:
- You last renewed your driver license in person at a Texas driver license office.
- Your ID card either expires in less than two years, or has been expired for less than two years.
- You are 18 years of age or older.
- You are a U.S. citizen.
- Your Social Security Number (SSN) is already on file.
If you meet the requirements for the card you are trying to renew, you must have the following to complete the renewal process:
- Your most recently issued Texas driver license or identification card (the one you are renewing) and the audit number from the card.
- A printer or email address to print or email your temporary driver license and payment receipt, if you renew online. No temporary driver license or receipt will be issued when renewing by phone.
- A valid credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover or American Express).
- The last four digits of your Social Security Number.
To renew your Texas driver license or ID card online, you will need to verify your social security number (SSN), identity, and citizenship. If you prefer to renew your license in person, you will need to bring the documents listed above to your local driver license office.
