A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who administers anesthesia and anesthesia-related care to patients before, during, and after surgery. They work with surgeons, anesthesiologists, dentists, podiatrists, and other healthcare providers to provide anesthesia care to people undergoing all types of procedures. CRNAs have specific responsibilities, which include educating people before and after they receive anesthesia for a procedure or surgery, assessing a person’s physical response to anesthesia, identifying possible risks to the person undergoing anesthesia, providing precise dosages of anesthesia, and monitoring the patients vital signs during the procedure. They care for people of all ages, undergoing all types of surgical procedures. CRNAs can work in several different medical settings, including hospital operating rooms, postanesthesia recovery rooms, emergency rooms, outpatient surgery centers, labor and delivery units, physician’s offices, and dentist’s offices. Some CRNAs have chosen to specialize in pediatric, obstetric, cardiovascular, plastic, dental, or neurosurgical anesthesia. The day-to-day of a CRNA is constantly shifting based on their case-load, the level of oversight required for their patients, and the general demand for their services. To become a CRNA, advanced education and training are required, and the final step is passing the National Certification Examination (NCE) .
