A supercharger is a device that pressurizes the air intake to above atmospheric pressure, which forces more air into the combustion chamber, allowing more fuel to be added and resulting in a bigger explosion and greater horsepower. It is essentially an air compressor that increases the pressure or density of air that is supplied to an internal combustion engine. Superchargers can be powered mechanically by means of a belt, shaft, or chain connected to the engine’s crankshaft. There are two main types of superchargers: positive displacement and dynamic compressors. Positive displacement superchargers deliver an almost constant level of boost pressure increase at all engine speeds, while dynamic superchargers cause the boost pressure to rise exponentially with engine speed (above a certain threshold) .

When a supercharged car is running, the engine pulls air through the intake, hood scoops, and any other entry points. Next, the supercharger compresses the air which increases the airs pressure and density. This way the engine receives more air through the same intake, which allows it to burn more fuel resulting in a boost in performance. The biggest advantage of a supercharger is that it provides an instant response unlike a turbocharger. Because it is driven by the engine, it is always providing a certain amount of boost. As the engine’s rpms increase, the amount of boost produced also increases.
