Antiperspirant is a skincare product that helps reduce underarm sweating. It is different from deodorant, which is only there to combat bad odor. Antiperspirants work by reducing sweat, while deodorants work by increasing the skins acidity. The active ingredients in antiperspirants usually include aluminum-based compounds that temporarily block sweat pores, reducing the amount of perspiration that reaches the skin. When antiperspirants are applied to the skin, perspiration in the underarm grabs and dissolves the antiperspirant particles, pulling them into the pores and forming superficial plugs that are just below the surface of the skin. When the body senses that the sweat duct is plugged, a feedback mechanism stops the flow. Antiperspirants are considered the first line of treatment for excessive sweating of the underarms, hands, feet, and sometimes face. They are available in many formulations, including creams, powders, sprays, towels, and roll-ons. The most widely used active ingredients in antiperspirants are metallic salts. Clinical strength antiperspirants contain higher concentrations of active ingredients than regular strength over-the-counter antiperspirants. To avoid skin irritation, it is important to follow the products instructions, apply at night before bed, and apply to completely dry skin.
