Descaling is an important part of cleaning your Keurig® brewer, and it means removing calcium deposits, or scale, that can build up inside a coffee maker over time. Calcium and scale are non-toxic, but if left unattended, they can hinder your brewers performance. Descaling should take place every 3 to 6 months or, for select brewers, when the descale light comes on. To descale your Keurig coffee maker, you will need a bottle of Keurig descaling solution, a large mug, and access to a sink. The process should take about 30 minutes and involves the following steps:
- Power off your brewer and empty the water reservoir.
- If your brewer has a Keurig water filter, remove it and set it aside.
- Disable any auto-off features.
- Pour the entire bottle of Keurig descaling solution into the water reservoir.
- Fill the empty bottle with water and pour it into the water reservoir.
- Place a large mug on the drip tray and run a brew cycle without a K-Cup® pod.
- Repeat the brew cycle until the water reservoir is empty, discarding the mug contents after each cycle.
- Rinse the water reservoir thoroughly and fill it with fresh water.
- Run multiple brew cycles without a K-Cup® pod until the water reservoir is empty to rinse away any remaining descaling solution.
It is important to follow the specific instructions for your Keurig model, which can be found on the Keurig website.
