What Does Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Look Like?

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common viral illness, especially in young children. It typically presents with the following signs and symptoms:

Skin and Mouth Appearance

• Rash on Hands and Feet: Small, red spots or bumps that may blister. These are usually found on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
• Mouth Sores: Painful red spots or ulcers inside the mouth, including on the tongue, gums, and inside of the cheeks. These can make eating and drinking uncomfortable.
• Other Areas: Sometimes, the rash can also appear on the buttocks, legs, or arms.

Additional Symptoms

• Fever: Often one of the first signs.
• Sore Throat
• General Malaise: Feeling tired or unwell.
• Loss of Appetite

Visual Description

• The rash typically starts as flat or raised red spots, which may develop into small blisters.
• Mouth sores are usually small ulcers with a red border and a grayish center.
• The rash is not usually itchy but can be uncomfortable.
