Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that play an important role in the bodys immune system. If lymphocytes are low, it means that there are not enough of these cells in the blood. This condition is called lymphopenia or lymphocytopenia.
Low lymphocyte levels can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
- Viral infections, such as COVID-19
- Autoimmune disorders
- Medications, such as corticosteroids
- Cancer and cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy
- Poor nutrition
If lymphocytes are low, it may be a cause for concern, but it does not necessarily mean that there is a serious underlying condition. However, it is important to talk to a healthcare provider to determine the cause of the low lymphocyte count and to take appropriate steps to increase the count to a healthy range. Some symptoms that may indicate low lymphocyte levels include unusual infections, swollen lymph nodes, skin conditions, joint pain and swelling, and signs of a viral infection.
