To censure a congressman means to formally vote on a resolution disapproving of their conduct, generally with the additional requirement that the member stand at the "well" of the House or Senate chamber to receive a verbal rebuke and reading of the resolution by the Speaker. Censure is a formal statement of disapproval in the form of a resolution that is adopted by majority vote. It is a way in which the House or Senate can discipline its members for inappropriate or detrimental conduct. A censure does not remove a member from office nor does it deny to a member their rights or privileges within Congress. However, it can have a powerful psychological effect on the member and can subsequently threaten the relationships they have with their colleagues. The punishment could include the stripping of ones committee positions and an investigation by a committee.
