Waivers is a transaction process required to move a player, who has met certain playing or experience requirements, from the NHL to the minor league level. When a player is put on waivers, any other NHL team may put in a ‘claim’ for the player and get them for their own roster. There are two different types of waivers: regular waivers and unconditional waivers. Regular waivers are the waivers an NHL team exercises when they want to send a player to the minor leagues. When a player is reassigned from the NHL to the AHL, he must pass through waivers (unless exempt) . If claimed by a team, that team must assume the player’s existing contract and it is taken off the player’s former team’s books. If a player clears waivers, it means that no other team in the NHL has put a claim on them, and they can now report to the minor league team. Unconditional waivers apply when a player is to be given an unconditional release from his contract, either by buyout or for the purpose of contract termination).
