Seeking asylum means that a person leaves their country of residence and enters another country to apply for asylum, which is international protection, in that other country. Asylum seekers are immigrants who have been forcibly displaced and might have fled their home country because of war or other factors harming them or their family. They are people who have left their country and are seeking protection from persecution and serious human rights violations in another country, but who haven’t yet been legally recognized as a refugee and are waiting to receive a decision on their asylum claim. If their case is accepted, they become considered a refugee. Seeking asylum is a human right protected under the law. People who flee their countries because they fear persecution can apply for asylum. If they are granted asylum, this gives them protection and the right to stay in the country.
