On an iPhone, green message bubbles simply mean the message was sent as a regular SMS/MMS text instead of an iMessage.
On iPhone (green vs blue)
- Blue bubbles = iMessage, which uses the internet (Wi‑Fi or mobile data) and only works between Apple devices.
- Green bubbles = SMS/MMS (or sometimes RCS via the carrier), which uses your cellular network instead of Apple’s iMessage service.
Common reasons messages are green
- You or the other person is using a non‑Apple phone (like Android), so iMessage isn’t available for that chat.
- iMessage is turned off on your phone or theirs, or you’re not connected to the internet, so your iPhone falls back to SMS/MMS.
- Apple’s iMessage service is temporarily down, or there’s an activation/network issue, causing messages to send as SMS instead.
Green texts do not automatically mean you’re blocked; they only show that the message went as SMS instead of iMessage. If you’re blocked, messages usually won’t show normal delivery/read behavior, regardless of color.
