Her daughter, McKenna Kelley, shared Rettons condition in an Instagram post on Tuesday, saying that Retton is "fighting for her life" and not able to breathe on her own. Kelley started a fundraising campaign on Rettons behalf for medical expenses, writing that Retton does not have medical insurance. Retton was 16 years old when she became an icon of the U.S. Olympic movement during her gold medal-winning performance at the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles. After her Olympic career, Retton transitioned from being a competitive gymnast to an influential motivational speaker and a notable television commentator. She also serves as the national chairwoman for the Childrens Miracle Network and passionately advocates for proper nutrition and the benefits of regular exercise.
