Perennial is a term used to describe things that exist or continue in the same way or state for a long time, as well as things that happen again and again. In botany, perennial describes plants whose life cycles are more than two years long. Perennial plants regrow every spring, while annual plants live for only one growing season, then die off. Perennials generally have a shorter blooming period compared to annuals, so its common for gardeners to use a combination of both plants in their yard. Perennial plants may set seed, but a common way to propagate them is by dividing established plants or taking cuttings. Unlike their short-lived counterparts, perennials are typically cold-hardy plants that will return again in the spring. They usually bloom for only one season each year (either spring, summer, or fall), but there are also reblooming and long-blooming perennials.
