In the United States, the Motion Picture Association film rating system is used to rate a motion pictures suitability for certain audiences based on its content. The "R" rating means that children under 17 are not allowed to attend R-rated motion pictures unaccompanied by a parent or adult guardian, and the movie may contain adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements. The rating descriptors, which are unique to each film, give more details about why the film received a certain rating. For example, some films descriptors may read "Rated R for strong/graphic violent content, disturbing material, sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use, and pervasive language".
