Ringworm is a fungal infection that can affect the skin, scalp, or nails. It is not caused by a worm, but rather by fungi called dermatophytes that live off the dead tissues of the skin, hair, and nails. Ringworm on the body, also known as tinea corporis, typically appears as a circular or ring-shaped rash with a raised, scaly border. The center of the rash may be redder around the outside with normal skin tone in the center, creating the appearance of a ring. The rash may be itchy and can have a flat, discolored patch that may appear red in lighter complexions and brown in darker complexions. Other rashes can look like ringworm, including spider bites, nummular eczema, and Lyme disease, so its important to consult a medical professional for an appropriate diagnosis.
