The larynx, also known as the voice box, is a hollow tube located in the middle of the neck, just above the trachea (windpipe) and behind the esophagus. It has several functions, including:

• Producing sound: The larynx contains the vocal cords, which vibrate together when air passes between them, producing the sound of your voice.

• Protecting the lower respiratory tract: The larynx prevents food and other foreign particles from entering the lower respiratory tracts. It has a flap of skin at the top called the epiglottis, which closes the entrance to the larynx when you swallow, preventing food and liquid from going into the windpipe.

• Allowing air to pass through: The larynx lets air pass from the throat to the trachea on the way to the lungs.

The larynx is a cartilaginous structure that is held into position by muscles and ligaments. It is about 4 to 5 centimeters in length and width. The larynx is also part of the respiratory system and is lined with mucous membrane tissue. Its walls are made of connective tissue, muscles, and cartilage, which provide support and keep the larynx elastic. The laryngeal muscles divide into intrinsic muscles, which are responsible for voice production, and extrinsic muscles that move the larynx.
