Third party, fire and theft insurance is a type of car insurance that provides coverage for three main things:
-
Third parties: This means it covers other people (third parties) and their property if you cause a car accident. So if an accident is your fault, your insurer would pay for repairs to other peoples vehicles or property.
-
Fire: This type of insurance covers your vehicle if it is damaged by fire or if there is an accidental fire to your vehicle.
-
Theft: It also covers your vehicle if it is stolen or if there is an attempted theft of your vehicle.
However, third party, fire and theft insurance does not cover your own car if you have an accident and its your fault. So if you accidentally scraped, bumped or crashed your car, your insurer wouldnt pay to fix or replace it. The same goes if any of your personal possessions get damaged in a crash - like your phone.
It is important to note that third party, fire and theft insurance is usually more expensive than third party insurance, which is the bare minimum car insurance that you need to drive on UK roads. Third party insurance covers the other party in an accident, their passengers, or property only, but there is no cover for your car if it’s stolen or damaged by fire.
