UNICEF stands for the United Nations Children's Fund. Originally, it was called the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund when it was established in 1946 to provide relief to children and mothers affected by World War II. In 1953, its name was officially changed to the United Nations Children's Fund, though it retained the acronym UNICEF.
