Winston Peters lost his Northland electorate seat to the National candidate Matt King by a margin of 1,389 votes during the 2017 election held on 23 September. Since Peters ranked first on the New Zealand First list, he remained in Parliament as a list MP. However, in the 2020 New Zealand general election held on 17 October, Winston Peters and his fellow NZ First MPs lost their seats after the partys share of the vote fell below the 5% threshold required to enter Parliament. Therefore, Winston Peters is currently not an electorate MP.
