Cyberpunk 2077 was developed using REDengine 4, which is CD Projekt Reds internal game engine. However, CD Projekt Red announced in March 2022 that its next Witcher game and other games going forward, including Cyberpunks sequel, codenamed Orion, will be developed with Unreal Engine 5. In a recent interview with Cyberpunk 2077 director Gabe Amatangelo, he confirmed that the studio plans on developing the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel using Unreal Engine 5. The transition to Unreal Engine 5 will allow CD Projekt Red to focus more on game design and content and less on patching up the underlying engine technology. It is important to note that the transition to Unreal Engine 5 does not mean that the studio is starting from scratch, as they will be able to use what they have learned while developing Cyberpunk 2077.
