The Environmental Health and Safety Plan (EHASP) pertains to the work environment, as needed, for improved safety, health, and wellbeing. It is a framework that requires organizations to manage their activities to anticipate and prevent circumstances that might result in occupational injury, illness, or incidents. The EHASP includes policies and guidelines for a safe and healthy work environment. Effective controls protect workers from workplace hazards, help avoid injuries, illnesses, and incidents, and minimize or eliminate safety and health risks. The EHASP includes the following components:
-
Environmental Health and Safety Policy: This sets forth guidelines for employers and trained personnel engaged in the use of hazardous chemicals.
-
Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP): This is a written program developed and implemented by the employer that sets forth procedures, equipment, personal protective equipment, and work practices that are capable of protecting employees from the health hazards presented by hazardous chemicals used in that particular workplace.
-
Emergency Preparedness and Facility Security Issues: This includes an emergency action plan (EAP) for accidents and spills, safety equipment, and chemical waste policies.
-
Required Training: This ensures that employees and sub-contractors have appropriate competencies for the job.
-
Safety Rules and Regulations: This includes standard operating procedures, laboratory housekeeping, and personal protective equipment.
-
Hazard Identification and Control: This includes the preparation, approval, and employee sign-on for specific job safety analyses (JSAs), the implementation of a regular safety audit schedule, and identification of hazard and environment risks by employees during their normal work activities.
