Indian refers to people from the country of India. India is a country in South Asia, and the majority of its population falls within three large linguistic groups: Indo-Aryan, Dravidian, and Iranic. The Indian society is traditionally divided into castes or clans, which are based primarily on labor divisions. Indian people are the citizens and nationals of the Republic of India.

In the context of race and ethnicity, Indian is considered an Asian ethnicity. The Office of Management and Budget defines Asian as "a person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam". Therefore, Indian people are considered part of the Asian ethnic group.
