Succession is a fictional TV series that follows the ups and downs of the Roy family, a massive media conglomerate headed by patriarch Logan Roy, and his four children who have various roles within the company. While the show is not based on any one family, it draws inspiration from various media families, including the Hearsts, the Redstones, John Malone, Robert Fitz of Comcast, Murdoch, and Robert and Rebekah Mercer, who founded Breitbart. However, the shows creator, Jesse Armstrong, wrote a screenplay about the inner workings of the Murdoch family that was never produced, so there are similarities between the Roy family and the Murdochs. Rupert Murdoch, the patriarch of the Murdoch family, is often compared to Logan Roy, the cunning leader of the Roy family. The Murdochs have six children, and the Roy children resemble bits of them. For example, Kendall Roy is groomed to take over his fathers company, similar to how James Murdoch was once seen as the heir apparent to his fathers media empire. However, the shows characters are fictional, and the events of the series are inspired by a mix of different media families.
