In many Western countries, the tradition of wearing an engagement ring on the fourth finger on the left hand, also known as the ring finger, can be traced back to the Ancient Romans who believed that this finger had a vein that ran directly to the heart, the Vena Amoris, meaning ‘vein of love’ . In England, for example, the engagement ring is worn on the ring finger of the left hand, and wedding rings are also usually worn on the ring finger of the left hand. However, there are no rules for wearing engagement rings, and some women prefer to wear their engagement ring on their right hand.
