Between diverging oceanic plates, a geological feature called an oceanic spreading ridge is formed. These ridges are submarine mountain ranges that are created as magma rises from deep within the Earth and erupts to form new crust on the lithosphere. The process of forming these mountain ranges is volcanic, but volcanoes and earthquakes along oceanic spreading ridges are not as violent as they are at convergent plate boundaries.
