Grease can be difficult to remove from clothes because it is a lipid and is insoluble in water. However, there are several methods that can be used to get grease out of clothes. Here are some effective ways to remove grease stains from clothes:
-
Dish Soap: Apply a small amount of dish soap to the grease stain and let it sit for 10-30 minutes. Rub the detergent gently with a soft cloth to saturate the stain. Wash and dry the clothes according to the clothing label directions.
-
Pretreatment Solution: Gently blot the stain with a paper towel, then use a pretreatment solution to break up the stain before washing.
-
Salt + Stain Remover: Immediately sprinkle salt on the grease stain to absorb the grease. After the salt absorbs the grease for a few minutes, use a stain remover as a spot treatment before laundering the garment in hot water.
-
Vinegar: Place an old towel on the underside of the fabric and saturate the stain with a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water. Let it sit for 30 minutes, then wash the garment as usual.
-
Baking Soda: Sprinkle baking soda on top of the grease stain and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, wash the garment as usual.
Its important to always check the clothings care tag before treating specialty fabrics like wool and delicates, which may require dry cleaning. Additionally, its recommended to place a piece of cardboard or an old towel in between the stain and the other side of the clothing to help prevent grease from transferring or spreading to a clean section of fabric while treating the stain.
