Ladybugs are beneficial insects in the garden because they are predators for many known garden insect pests. However, if they are gathering indoors in large numbers, they can be considered a nuisance. Here are some ways to get rid of ladybugs:
-
Sweeping and Vacuuming: Gathering up ladybugs with a broom and dustpan or vacuum cleaner is one of the easiest ways to remove a colony. Vacuum up a large group of ladybugs and immediately empty the vacuum bag or canister outside. Physically relocating the colony will discourage more from joining if the infestation has not grown too large. After they are removed, wash the area with soap to eliminate any chemical trails used to attract more bugs.
-
Dish Soap: If the infestation has grown out of control and it is too difficult to simply relocate the colony, dish soap is a simple way to get rid of a large range of small bugs in your home. Spray a colony with soapy water or leave a bowl that combines soap and water near a light source where they gather. The thickness of the soap keeps the ladybugs from leaving the water easily.
-
Duct Tape: Use duct tape to trap ladybugs. Place the sticky side of the tape on the surface where the ladybugs are gathering. Once the tape is covered with ladybugs, dispose of it.
-
Herbs and Essential Oils: A range of herbs and essential oils can also deter ladybugs from gathering or entering your home. Be sure to check if these items are safe for pets and children if they are in an area where they may come into contact with them. Some examples include citronella or citrus oil, cloves, bay leaves, and lavender.
-
Light Traps: Use a bright light to draw ladybugs in and trap them. You can then safely remove them from your home.
-
Insecticides: You can use insecticides inside your home, but this comes with health risks for both people and animals. If you choose to use insecticides, be sure to follow the instructions carefully and take precautions such as keeping animals out of the treated area, using only the recommended amount of insecticide, and disposing of any unneeded insecticides as soon as possible.
Prevention is also key to keeping ladybugs away. Seal up any cracks or crevices on the exterior of your home to prevent them from entering in the first place.
