Halal is an Arabic word that means "lawful" or "permitted". It is a dietary law derived from Islamic teachings and refers to what is allowed under Islamic law. Halal food must be prepared, processed, and stored in accordance with Islamic law. The key features of halal food include:

• Lawful food: Halal food is that which is permitted and allowed by the law-Giver Allah. Under Islamic law, all sources of food are lawful except for specific sources, including their products and derivatives, which are considered unlawful.

• Animal slaughter: The Islamic form of slaughtering animals or poultry, dhabiha, involves killing through a cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery, and windpipe. Animals must be alive and healthy at the time of slaughter, and all blood must be drained from the carcass. During the process, a Muslim will recite a dedication, known as tasmiya or shahada.

• Treatment of animals: Halal food must be prepared with minimal suffering to the animal, and the pronouncement of Gods name during the slaughter is essential, as the animal is being sacrificed to Him.

Halal is not just about dietary restrictions. It also covers all aspects of life, and the rituals in all matters are being perfected by Islam. The definition of halal comes from the Quran, which defines what halal and haram are. However, the verses describing these two terms are often vague, leaving much of it up to interpretation.
