There are two different incidents related to Ajax games that happened recently. The first one occurred on September 24, 2023, during Ajaxs home Eredivisie match against archrivals Feyenoord. The game was suspended 11 minutes into the second half after disgruntled fans threw flares onto the pitch with the visitors leading 3-0. When flares were thrown onto the pitch for a second time, with many landing near the goal, the referee stopped the contest and directed the players down the tunnel. Fans paid no heed as the club displayed the message "Lighting of fireworks is prohibited" on the big screen at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam. The game was abandoned, and Ajax later fired its director of football, Sven Mislintat, who had joined the club in May.
The second incident happened on September 30, 2023, during Ajaxs Dutch league away game against RKC Waalwijk. The game was abandoned in the 84th minute after RKC goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen was knocked out in a clash with an opposing player. Vaessen went down after a collision with Ajax forward Brian Brobbey, causing panicked reactions from his teammates as they frantically called for medical help. Screens were put up around the goalkeeper to shield him from the public eye, and players from both sides watched with tears in their eyes as a defibrillator was rushed onto the field. Vaessen lay motionless on the field for minutes before he was carried away on a stretcher. Both teams went inside, and after deliberations, the game was called off. Dutch newspaper Telegraaf said Vaessen, 28, had been taken to the hospital. Ajax was leading the game 3-2 when play was stopped.
