A student from Mapleton High School collapsed and died during homecoming festivities prior to the football game. The student was identified as Bre McKean, a senior at Mapleton High School, who was on the homecoming court and was a candidate for homecoming queen. She was also a multi-sport athlete who lettered in volleyball, basketball, and softball. The incident occurred during pregame homecoming festivities, and the football game between Mapleton and South Central was suspended at halftime. The cause of death was a medical emergency. The Mapleton Local School District announced the passing of Bre McKean and expressed their condolences to the McKean family, friends, and the Mapleton community. The district also canceled all Mapleton athletic events through Wednesday, October 4, and the homecoming dance scheduled for Saturday, September 30, was canceled. Grief recovery counselors were made available to students and staff on Monday, October 2. A memorial service for Bre McKean was held on Saturday, October 7, at Ashland Universitys Niss Athletic Center.
