On October 7, 2023, Hamas militants attacked the Supernova trance music festival in the Negev Desert, near Kibbutz Reim, Israel, killing at least 260 people and taking others captive. The festival was attended by around 3,500 young people, and many of the fighters arrived in trucks and on motorcycles, wearing body armor and brandishing AK-47 assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades. The attack was part of a larger assault on Israel by Hamas fighters who breached Gazas border fence early on Saturday from Gaza. The militants descended on the gathering in paragliders and by road, and some attendees were executed at close range. The attack was premeditated and highly coordinated, and the militants also raided nearby communities. The aftermath of the attack was described as apocalyptic, with discarded water bottles, shoes, and tents still standing. The Israeli military intentionally left the dead body of a militant at the scene of the massacre, and Israeli Defense Forces soldiers remain at the festival site to guard the area in the event of another attack and to clean up the carnage.
