In October 2025, Western Alaska experienced a powerful and devastating storm caused by the remnants of Typhoon Halong. This storm brought hurricane-force winds, record floodwaters, and massive damage to coastal communities in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region. Several villages were completely flooded several feet deep, with homes swept off their foundations, some with people still inside. Rescue efforts have saved at least 51 people, but there was at least one confirmed death and multiple people remain missing. The storm caused cracks in runways, snapped utility poles, and led to widespread power outages. Over 1,400 survivors were sheltered as emergency crews and the National Guard launched a large-scale response in what is considered one of Alaska's worst recent natural disasters. The governor declared a disaster for the region and vowed ongoing aid and recovery efforts. The storm surge reached nearly 6.6 feet above normal high tide levels, breaking previous records and resulting in the destruction and displacement of many residents in remote, hard-hit communities like Kipnuk and Kwigillingok.
