On October 16, 2023, two Swedish nationals were shot dead in central Brussels, and a third person was wounded. The shooting happened near the Boulevard dYpres in central Brussels, about three miles from a stadium where thousands of soccer fans were attending a match between Belgium and Sweden. The alleged attacker was still at large, and the motive of the shooting was not yet clear. Belgian authorities raised the terror alert to its highest level in the capital after the fatal shooting of two Swedes in Brussels that Prime Minister Alexander De Croo suggested was linked to "terrorism". The OCAD anti-terror center also said that the terror alert for the rest of the country was raised to its second-highest level. The highest priority for authorities was to get thousands of football fans attending the Belgium-Sweden football match safely out of the stadium where the match had been abandoned halfway through.
