According to multiple sources, including Human Rights Watch, The New York Times, and the Associated Press, Russian forces committed a mass murder of Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war during the fight for and occupation of the city of Bucha as part of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The massacre occurred from March 4 to 31, 2022, and photographic and video evidence of the massacre emerged on April 1, 2022, after Russian forces withdrew from the city. Witnesses reported that several Russian military units operated in Bucha during the occupation. The Russians hunted people on lists prepared by their intelligence services and went door to door to identify potential threats. Those who didn’t pass this filtration, including volunteer fighters and civilians suspected of assisting Ukrainian troops, were tortured and executed. Human Rights Watch documented extensive evidence of summary executions, other unlawful killings, enforced disappearances, and torture, all of which would constitute war crimes and potential crimes against humanity. As of June 13, 2022, Ukrainian authorities said that 1,316 bodies had been uncovered in Kyiv Oblast, including Bucha, since the Russian withdrawal.
