In September 2025, Nepal experienced large-scale protests predominantly led by Generation Z against government corruption, the display of wealth by officials, and a nationwide ban on numerous social media platforms. These protests turned violent with incidents of vandalism, arson, and clashes between protesters and security forces, resulting in over 70 deaths and more than 1,300 injuries. The unrest led to the resignation of Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli on September 9, 2025. Following this, Sushila Karki, a former Supreme Court chief justice, was appointed as the interim Prime Minister—the first female to hold the position in Nepal. The protests involved a significant youth movement using online platforms such as Discord to organize, and although initially sparked by the social media ban, they grew to encompass broader demands for transparency, governance reform, and political accountability. By mid-September, the situation stabilized with curfews lifted, but the scars of the unrest linger as the country prepares for elections scheduled for March 2026.
