Chris Kaba was a 24-year-old rapper from south London who was shot dead by a police officer in Streatham Hill, London, on September 5, 2022. On the day of the shooting, an unmarked vehicle followed the car Kaba was driving, which had been flagged by the Automatic Number Plate Recognition camera as a vehicle linked to a firearms incident in the previous days. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) began an investigation into the shooting, and in September 2023, a police officer was charged with Kabas murder.
According to the IOPC, a police officer fired a single round at Kaba through the cars windscreen, striking him. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died of his injuries just after 12:00 am the following day. No non-police firearms were found either in the car or at the scene. Kabas family called for a "homicide investigation" into his death and for information about whether any weapons were found.
Kaba had been charged in 2018 with possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, in relation to an incident on December 30, 2017. He was found guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court in January 2019, and sentenced to four years in a Young Offenders Institute. He was released in 2021.
The officer who fired the fatal shot has been suspended from duty and notified that they are now under criminal investigation. The CPS has authorized a charge of murder against a Metropolitan Police officer following the death of Chris Kaba.
